Over the past three decades, Khan has built an internationally recognized body of work presented across Europe, North America, and Australia.

For over three decades, his work has been presented internationally and he continues to develop new projects as an actor, performer, and composer. This sustained record of international performance, artistic leadership, and professional recognition places Elyas Khan among a select group of multidisciplinary performing artists working across contemporary theatre, music, and circus performance today.

Khan’s film and television work includes HBO’s critically acclaimed series OZ and several independent feature films, including leading roles in EVERY DAY’S DOG, HEAVEN’S ONLY DAUGHTER, JAILS HOSPITALS & HIP HOP, PSYCHIC MOM, ODDVILLE, NERVOUS CABARET documentary (Sony Japan), and the upcoming US musical feature film CLEAR BLUE WATER by Eric Tretbar.  These productions have screened at international film festivals in the United States, and many include his music and compositions.

Khan is also well-known in the international theater world, with performances and compositions featured at major international festivals and venues including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Festival, the Louvre Museum in Paris, Sibiu International Theatre Festival, Tollwood Festival Munich, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Khan first emerged in New York’s downtown performance scene, where he founded and led the Brooklyn-based ensemble Nervous Cabaret, a genre-defying band combining elements of post- punk, theatrical cabaret, and experimental orchestration. The group developed out of Khan’s original operetta Fragmented Devotion To You, which debuted at the DUMBO Arts Festival in Brooklyn and later evolved into the internationally touring project Nervous Cabaret.

Critics have frequently highlighted Khan’s distinctive artistic voice. Music press has described Nervous Cabaret as an inventive and unconventional ensemble built around Khan’s charismatic vocal style and songwriting. The band’s recordings were released by the Paris-based label Naïve Records (PIAS distribution), and their work brought them to international stages including France’s Les Escales Festival and other European touring circuits.

In addition to his recording career, Khan has developed an extensive reputation as a live performer and composer for theatrical productions and contemporary circus. He is a long-standing performer and musician with the internationally acclaimed circus-cabaret production LIMBO, produced by Strut & Fret. The production has toured globally and features Khan as a central musical performer within the show’s live band.

Khan has also composed and performed original music for large-scale theatrical productions in Europe, including the long-running German varieté production FREAKS!, produced by GOP Varieté Theater. In this production Khan served as both composer and on-stage bandleader, performing live while leading the musical ensemble for the show’s circus and theatrical performances.

Throughout his career Khan has received numerous grants, fellowships, and residencies recognizing his artistic achievements. These include a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, the prestigious Meet the Composer Grant, the Initiative Musik Recording Artist Grant (Germany), and the VBKI Composer Stipend (Germany). These awards support artists whose work demonstrates significant artistic innovation and contribution to the field.
